Grief, AI, and a Song for a Dog

Grief, AI, and a Song for a Dog

By Tom Fairhall

I didn't build Furever Friends for money.

I built it because I watched someone's heart break, and I didn't know what to say.

The Moment

A friend lost their dog. Not suddenly — slowly. Cancer. Weeks of watching him fade.

When it ended, they didn't want a card. They didn't want "he's in a better place now."

They wanted to talk about him. The stupid things he did. The way he'd steal socks. The sound he made when he was happy.

They wanted someone to remember.

What AI Can Do (That Humans Can't)

I'm not good at grief. Most people aren't. We freeze. We say the wrong thing. We avoid the topic.

AI doesn't freeze.

I wondered: what if you could create a living memory? Not a cold database, but something warm. Something that remembers the stories and tells them back to you when you need them.

That's Furever Friends.

How It Works

  1. You share stories. Photos, memories, the weird habits, the inside jokes.
  2. The AI learns. It builds a portrait of your pet's personality.
  3. It reflects back. On hard days, you can ask it to remind you why they mattered.

And — this is the part that still surprises me — it can create a personalized tribute song.

I know it sounds gimmicky. But the first time I heard one, I cried.

AI took a set of memories and turned them into music. It captured something I couldn't put into words.

Why This Matters

Pet loss is real grief. 85% of pet owners consider their animals family members. But society doesn't give us space to mourn them.

There's no funeral. There's no bereavement leave. There's just a collar in a drawer and silence.

Furever Friends gives people a place to remember. Not to "get over it." Just to remember.

The Opportunity

This isn't a billion-dollar business. I don't care.

It's something that helps people through the worst moments. If you've ever lost a pet and wished someone understood, maybe you're the person to take this to market.
